How do I get started selling on eBay? If only I had a nickel for everytime I heard that question.

The first thing that you should know about selling on eBay is that Reputation is king! Your clients have to trust that you are going to deliver the product that you are selling at a good price and quickly. I'll get back to reputation in a little while.

Let's talk about selling on eBay. Many people dream about making a living on eBay by selling their products and making a nice profit. Sounds easy doesn't it? Many new sellers source an expensive product, place it for sale on eBay, and then are surprised to find that their item has sold for a loss.

There are a couple of reasons why the item sold for a loss. One of those reasons is the lack of reputation. Buyers are always looking for a bargain but they also want to make sure that the person that they are buying from is reputable. If the Seller's feedback rating is low, or non-existent, a potential buyer will likely shy away from bidding on the product. I know that when I see a new seller selling an expensive item on eBay, the first thought that goes through my mind is, "This guy is trying to make a couple of hundred bucks, and then disappear". I always feel bad for other bidders that place bids on the item because I believe that they are being taken for a ride.

So, how do you gain a good reputation? In my opinion, the best way to get a good reputation is to start off small. Find an inexpensive item that you can sell a lot of. Deliver excellence. Drop a note in the package that says thank you. Put the product in the mail the same day that it is sold or the very next day. Send your customer an email and let them know when you're shipping the product.

As you deliver your product, your reputation will grow and people will start trusting you. At this point, you can move onto  a slightly more expensive product and always deliver excellence. At some point, your reputation will be so great that people will pay slightly more for your product, versus your competition, because they know that you will deliver and standby your item.
